A man believed to be connected to the infamous Gilgo Beach cold case murders in Long Island is expected to be charged with the killing of a fourth woman, according to a source familiar with the matter. The suspect, 60-year-old Rex Heuermann, is scheduled to appear in Suffolk County Court next week.

Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 and charged with the slayings of three women – Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello – whose remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach in December 2010. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office has yet to comment on the upcoming charges.

Additionally, a DNA match was made between a hair found on burlap that wrapped one of the victims and a DNA sample taken from crusts in a pizza box discarded by Heuermann.
The Gilgo Beach cold case murders have long perplexed investigators, with the bodies of at least 10 victims discovered in the area starting in late 2010. The initial search for a missing woman named Shannen Gilbert led to the discovery of additional remains on Gilgo Beach. These victims, later referred to as the Gilgo Four, were identified as Brainard-Barnes, Barthelemy, Waterman, and Costello. Six more sets of remains were found along Ocean Parkway in March 2011.
