Oakland Police Officer Murder Case: Another Suspect Charged in Fatal Shooting

In a significant development, prosecutors in Oakland have filed murder charges against a new suspect in the killing of Oakland police Officer Tuan Le. The suspect, Marquise Cooper, is accused of fleeing the Bay Area after the fatal shooting, which occurred during a cannabis dispensary break-in on December 29. Cooper becomes the fourth person to face charges in Officer Le’s death and the third person to be charged with murder.

Charges and Arrest Details

Marquise Cooper, aged 34, has been charged with one count of murder and two counts of commercial burglary in connection with the tragic incident. He is currently being held without bail in Santa Rita Jail and is scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing on Tuesday. Cooper was extradited to the Bay Area from Southern California after being arrested and booked into jail last week.

The Alameda County District Attorney had previously filed murder and burglary charges against Mark Demetrious Sanders and Allen Starr Brown, along with burglary charges against Sebron Russell. Police believe that Sanders is the individual who fired shots at an undercover police car, ultimately resulting in Officer Le’s death.

All four suspects remain in custody. Additionally, Sanders’ mother was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory, but she was released without any charges a few days later.

The Tragic Incident

Officer Tuan Le and his colleague were responding to reports of a burglary at a cannabis dispensary when they were fired upon. Tragically, Officer Le was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries. The four suspects were identified through video surveillance, phone records, and other digital evidence. Police believe that this same group of individuals was responsible for multiple break-ins at the same dispensary prior to Officer Le’s killing.

Past Criminal Records

It has come to light that Mark Demetrious Sanders, Sebron Russell, and Marquise Cooper were all on probation at the time of the incident due to a similar burglary case in Pittsburg. In that case, the three men had burglarized a home used for marijuana cultivation, and a firearm was found in one of their vehicles. They had received 120-day jail sentences and two-year probation terms, set to expire later this year.

Remarkably, this is not Sanders’ first involvement in a murder case. In 2014, he faced charges as a juvenile for the murder of an 18-year-old man during a shootout in Oakland. Sanders eventually pleaded no contest to manslaughter and was released from prison within five years.

The investigation into Officer Tuan Le’s murder remains ongoing, and authorities continue to gather evidence to ensure justice is served. The Oakland Police Department, along with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, is committed to holding all responsible parties accountable for this heinous crime.
