Ulster County Resident Fatally Struck in Hit-and-Run Accident

Ulster County resident Starllie Swonyoung, a student at SUNY in Purchase, Westchester County, tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday, January 10. The incident occurred around 5:10 p.m. on Route 9W, between the Village of Saugerties and the hamlet of Malden.

Saugerties Police Chief Robert Nuzzo reported that Swonyoung was struck while standing on the southbound shoulder of the roadway. She was immediately transported to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston by Diaz Ambulance, but sadly succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Chief Nuzzo stated, “We are actively looking into several leads and are asking anyone with information to call us.”

Swonyoung, who was a former student of the Woodstock Day School and the Rock Academy in Saugerties, is being remembered as a “magical creature” by her friends and loved ones. A Facebook post describing her as a light, an angel, and a wise and kind being who brightened the world, has garnered heartfelt comments and support.

In memory of Swonyoung, the Woodstock Day School will be holding a candlelight vigil on Sunday, January 14, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The vigil will take place at the school, located at 1430 Glasco Turnpike in Saugerties. All are welcome to attend, and carpooling is suggested to accommodate the expected turnout.

To assist Swonyoung’s family with funeral costs, a GoFundMe page has been created by her friends. The fundraiser describes her as a remarkable individual who will be greatly missed by those fortunate enough to have known her.

Funeral arrangements for Swonyoung have not yet been announced.
