Accident – death – Obituary News : DULUTH: Adjusting to the New Year and Reflecting on Recent Events

It’s almost two weeks into the new year, and many of us are still finding ourselves writing, typing, or scribbling “2023” instead of “2024.” It’s a common mistake that takes a bit of time to overcome. Is there a grace period for this sort of thing? When do we have to fully embrace 2024 and leave 2023 behind?

According to Ryan Seacrest and the calendars on our desks and computers, it’s definitely 2024. So why is it so difficult to adjust? Perhaps it’s just muscle memory overriding what our brains are telling our arms and hands. Many of us can relate to this disconnection between our minds and bodies during the first days of the new year. But fear not, eventually, this confusion will dissipate, and our minds and bodies will once again be in harmony with the new year. Hopefully, this happens long before we put away our Christmas trees.

In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the highlights from the Duluth News Tribune (DNT) over the past week.

Mourning in Cloquet and the Northland

The community of Cloquet and the Northland are currently in mourning following a shocking double homicide at the Super 8 Hotel on Monday night. The victims were identified as 22-year-old Shellby Trettel from Cloquet and 35-year-old Patrick Jeffrey Roers from Deer River, Minnesota. The suspect, 32-year-old Nicholas Elliot Lenius from Ramsey, Minnesota, was found dead on the hotel grounds with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At this point, the police have not found a connection between the three individuals. However, the community came together to support Trettel’s loved ones during a vigil in Cloquet. The DNT’s reporter Macklin Caruso and photographer Clint Austin attended the event to learn more about Trettel and the people who loved her.

The Importance of Weight Training in High School Sports

When it comes to successful high school sports teams, one common factor is a robust weight-training regimen. The Duluth News Tribune’s sports reporter Reagan Hoverman delved into several high-achieving prep programs to explore the role of weight training in their success. The results were clear: weight training is considered an integral part of their training and overall performance.

A Spaceport on the Iron Range?

Typically, attending a city council meeting wouldn’t be on an arts and entertainment reporter’s agenda. However, the Hoyt Lakes City Council meeting on Monday night caught the attention of Jay Gabler due to one intriguing item on the agenda: a discussion about potentially building a spaceport on the Iron Range.

Gabler couldn’t resist the opportunity to learn more about this fascinating proposal and attended the meeting. In his weekly Front Row Seat column, he shared his thoughts on the possibility of a spaceport near Duluth. While the idea is exciting, let’s hope it doesn’t become as rough and tumble as Mos Eisley spaceport from “Star Wars,” where Obi-Wan warned Luke Skywalker about the presence of scum and villainy.
