MILWAUKEE – A Milwaukee man is facing six felony charges in connection with a tragic crash that occurred on the city’s northwest side in June 2023. The collision resulted in the death of a man and injuries to two children.
The accused, 23-year-old Navarus Campbell, is charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, among other crimes. Court records indicate that a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
The fatal crash took place near the intersection of 76th and Florist on June 26. A Buick carrying a 32-year-old man, a 6-year-old boy, and a 3-year-old girl was struck by Campbell’s van, resulting in a secondary collision with another vehicle.

According to a criminal complaint, the 3-year-old girl sustained a deep laceration to her head, requiring more than 20 stitches, while the 6-year-old boy suffered head injuries, requiring over 10 stitches and a broken leg. The 32-year-old driver, identified as Taylor Poirier, succumbed to his injuries several days after the accident.
During the investigation, a woman initially claimed to be the driver of the van, but surveillance footage revealed that Campbell was behind the wheel. The woman eventually admitted to lying and identified Campbell as the driver.
In an interview with the police, Campbell stated that he was traveling westbound on Florist Avenue when the Buick turned in front of him at a green light. He claimed to be driving at the speed limit of 30 mph, but data from the van’s airbag control module indicated that he was driving at 64 mph just two seconds before the crash. The module also showed that Campbell applied the brakes 1.6 seconds prior to the collision.
Following the crash, Campbell was taken to a hospital for a blood draw. The Wisconsin State Crime Lab analyzed the blood sample and found the presence of THC, the active component of marijuana.
Authorities discovered that Campbell only possessed an instruction permit, which had been revoked, and had never been issued a valid driver’s license. He had previously been cited 27 times for operating a vehicle while suspended or revoked. Notably, he had also been convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated less than a month before the fatal crash.
