Lewes, DE – Delaware State Police swiftly responded to a trespassing complaint and successfully apprehended John Wanner, a 57-year-old resident of Lewes, Delaware. Wanner was charged with burglary and other related offenses on the evening of January 12, 2024.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., troopers were dispatched to a residence located on the 34000 block of Clematis Street in Lewes following reports of trespassing. The homeowners, who were checking on their second residence, made a startling discovery when they found an unknown male inside their home. The suspect, later identified as John Wanner, managed to flee the scene before the arrival of the police. However, he left behind three cats and three dogs. The investigation revealed that Wanner gained entry into the house by breaking a glass door. Disturbing evidence indicated that Wanner had been living in the house, as there was food left on the stove, the TV was on, and animal waste was scattered throughout the residence.

A witness, who was familiar with the suspect as a former neighbor that recently sold his home and was involved in the maintenance of the development, positively identified Wanner. Further investigation in the surrounding area led to the discovery of a broken door at a neighboring residence, although no evidence of entry was found. During the search, a trooper spotted Wanner fleeing through the nearby woods. Despite repeated commands to stop, Wanner refused, leading to a brief foot pursuit before his eventual apprehension. A subsequent search of Wanner’s person revealed burglary tools, a dagger, and a folding knife.

Wanner was transported to Troop 7, where he faced several charges, including:
