Accident – death – Obituary News : 18-year-old Brian Rodriguez, a resident of Winthrop Harbor, has been charged in connection to the homicide of 20-year-old Willie Wright Jr. The incident occurred during a gun exchange outside an apartment building in Zion on Wednesday.

Rodriguez is facing three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, which is classified as a Class 4 felony. The charges stem from the fatal shooting of Wright, a resident of North Chicago. The Zion Police Department and Zion Fire & Rescue Department responded to the scene at the 4200 block of Barberry Lane in Zion on Wednesday evening.

During Rodriguez’s first appearance hearing at the Lake County Courthouse on Saturday morning, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Lillian Lewis revealed that Rodriguez and his brother had arranged to meet with Wright for the purpose of selling or exchanging a gun. Witness statements indicate that Rodriguez allegedly discharged his gun during the exchange. However, it is unclear how many rounds were fired and if any of them struck Wright.

Following the incident, SWAT teams from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) executed search warrants at Rodriguez’s apartment in the 600 block of Sheridan Road in Winthrop Harbor on Thursday evening. Inside the apartment, officers discovered a Glock handgun, two disassembled rifles, drum magazines, and ammunition. These items are believed to be related to the Zion homicide investigation.

In addition to the charges related to the homicide, Rodriguez had an active arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on an unrelated traffic case. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in 2021.

During the execution of the search warrants, Rodriguez allegedly refused to exit his apartment. However, police eventually located him hiding inside and took him into custody.

During the hearing, Lewis requested that Rodriguez be detained until his detention hearing. She argued that the evidence collected supports the prosecution’s case. On the other hand, Lake County Assistant Public Defender Samantha VonSpreecken requested Rodriguez’s release until the hearing, claiming that the incident may be a case of self-defense.

Ultimately, Lake County Judge Paul Novak ordered Rodriguez to be detained until his detention hearing, which is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Following the hearing, Rodriguez was booked into the Lake County Jail.

As of now, police have not released further details regarding the homicide investigation, and it remains unknown if anyone else is in custody in connection to the incident.
