Three more individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Iswarya, who was allegedly killed for marrying a Dalit. The arrested individuals, identified as K Chinrasu (30), R Thiruselvam (39), and T Murugesan (34), are all caste Hindus from Neivaviduthi. They were produced before a Pattukkottai court on Friday and have been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days. Iswarya’s parents, P Perumal (50) and Roja (45), were arrested on January 10.

In response to the incident, executive director of ‘Evidence,’ Kathir, urged Chief Minister MK Stalin to enact a special law to curb honor killings. He also called for the formation of a special investigation team comprising personnel from another state to handle the case. Kathir addressed reporters, highlighting several lapses in the investigation, including the police’s failure to produce the couple in court following their inter-caste marriage and the subsequent handover of Iswarya to her parents.

According to Kathir, Iswarya’s body was carried for a distance of one kilometer through the village without anyone questioning the perpetrators. He expressed concern that the entire village may be in favor of honor killings. Kathir emphasized the need for the arrest of all individuals directly or indirectly involved in the killing. He also criticized the Tamil Nadu government for failing to follow the Supreme Court’s 21 guidelines for handling honor killing cases. ‘Evidence’ conducted a field inspection and found that there were 24 incidents of honor killing in Tamil Nadu between 2021 and 2023.

Kathir further called on the state to provide full security to Iswarya’s husband, Naveen, and his family. He stressed the importance of registering the statements of witnesses under CrPC 164 to prevent them from becoming hostile witnesses in the future.

Iswarya, who worked in a hosiery unit in Tiruppur, got married to Naveen on December 31. However, her parents, including Perumal and his relatives, opposed the alliance and filed a missing person’s case at the Palladam police station on January 2. They brought Iswarya back home and, tragically, she was later found murdered. The perpetrators cremated her body on January 3.

The incident has sparked calls for action against honor killings and the need for stricter laws to prevent such heinous acts. The case highlights the ongoing struggle for social equality and the need to address deep-rooted caste discrimination in society..
