Traverse City Man Arrested and Charged with Methamphetamine Possession
CADILLAC — A 42-year-old man from Traverse City, James Ross Winrick, was recently apprehended and charged in Wexford County’s 84th District Court for allegedly possessing methamphetamine and other offenses.
Winrick now faces one count of possession of methamphetamine, second or subsequent offense, and two counts of police officer assault, resist, or obstruct for his involvement in an incident that took place on January 4 in Cadillac. Additionally, a habitual offender fourth offense notice has been added to the charges. If convicted, Winrick could face a potential life sentence on the methamphetamine-related offense.
The arrest was the result of a joint effort by a trooper and cadet from the Cadillac Post of the Michigan State Police. On the evening of January 4, they pulled over a vehicle on Granite Street near Laurel Street in Cadillac. As the vehicle came to a stop, the passenger door opened, and a man fled on foot, prompting a pursuit.
According to the Michigan State Police, the man managed to reach a backyard fence on Granite Street before being apprehended by the trooper. However, he resisted handcuffing, pulling his arms away and hiding them under his body. After a brief struggle, the trooper successfully restrained him and proceeded to conduct a search.

During the search, the trooper discovered a rolled-up sock and a glass pipe containing residue that tested positive for methamphetamine in the immediate vicinity of the struggle. It was later identified that the man in question was James Ross Winrick, who was also wanted for a parole violation.
The female driver, a 35-year-old woman from Traverse City, informed the troopers that she had witnessed Winrick allegedly hiding something in his shoe before fleeing. She was not arrested and was allowed to leave the scene, while Winrick was taken into custody and lodged in the Wexford County Jail.
Following his arraignment, the court set Winrick’s bond at $250,000 cash or surety. He is scheduled to appear in court again on January 23.
