Accident – death – Obituary News : The Palisades Tahoe area, located in Olympic Valley, California, was forced to close its doors on Wednesday, January 10, following a powerful avalanche that occurred at the Tahoe Ski Resort. The incident took place when a snowbank collapsed, causing chaos for the visitors who were present at the resort.
As soon as the authorities were informed about the avalanche, the rescue team members swiftly arrived at the scene and initiated their operation. Tragically, it has been reported by reputable outlets such as NBC News that one person lost their life in the incident, while another individual sustained injuries. The deceased has been identified as Kenneth Kidd, a 66-year-old resident of Point Reyes, located in northern California, as confirmed by the Placer County Sheriff’s department, which was in charge of the Lake Tahoe area. Although the identity of the injured skier remains unknown, it has been confirmed that no other individuals are missing.

Approximately four hours after the occurrence of the snow slide, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office issued an official update, stating, “The avalanche caused one fatality and one injury.” According to Michael Gross, the vice president of mountain operations at Palisades Tahoe, the deceased and injured individuals were both visitors from outside the area.
The avalanche occurred on the Palisades side of the resort mountain, specifically above KT-22’s GS bowl region, as reported by Palisades Tahoe. NBC News also confirmed that the avalanche resulted in the unfortunate death of one man and caused injuries to another. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office extended their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Kidd.
Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the other individual were not life-threatening, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office. Additionally, there have been no reports of any other missing persons. NBC News further stated that all search operations have been concluded, and no other individuals are currently present on the mountain as a result of the avalanche.
According to Michael Gross, the KT-22 ski season began at 9 am on Wednesday. He mentioned that the ski patrol had been conducting avalanche control assessments since Sunday, prior to the start of the ski season. These assessments involve evaluating the weather conditions and placing safety and hazard markers. However, it should be noted that on the day of the incident, strong winds reaching speeds of 110 mph (177 kph) were recorded at the summit of Alpine Meadows, which is Palisades’ nearby sibling resort. As a result, the mountain was closed for the day.

Coincidentally, a series of intense winter storms swept over parts of the eastern United States and Canada, leading to the deaths of at least five people. These storms also caused power outages for over half a million individuals. Following the tragedy at the Tahoe Ski Resort, a significant storm with heavy snowfall and violent winds moved into the area.
Eyewitnesses to the incident reported seeing multiple individuals buried in the snow. One witness, Darian Shirazi, shared their experience on social media, stating, “Multiple people were buried, and several were screaming as all of the GS Bowl slid from top to bottom. My condolences to the family of the snowboarder who passed away. This was a shocking and terrifying experience. Ski safe.”
In order to ensure the safety of the visitors, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office worked diligently throughout the incident. Their prompt response, along with the efforts of the rescue team members, contributed to the successful extraction of one individual, while other guests provided assistance in rescuing the other person. Michael Gross acknowledged that he was unaware of the depth at which the individuals were buried in the snow.
