The shooting occurred in the vicinity of Angel Duran Drive and Prince Drive. Officers from the Española Police Department had pulled over a vehicle in which they discovered 33-year-old Derick Salazar, who was wanted for a felony burglary warrant.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 29-year-old Brandon Archuleta. According to New Mexico State Police, Archuleta has an extensive criminal history that includes charges of assault, battery with a deadly weapon, and burglary.

Despite the officers’ attempts to get Salazar to exit the vehicle, he refused to comply. In an effort to subdue him, a police sergeant discharged his stun gun into the vehicle, but it proved unsuccessful. Archuleta subsequently drove away from Railroad Avenue, where the traffic stop had taken place, with Salazar still in the vehicle, as stated by NMSP.

A police pursuit ensued, leading law enforcement and the fleeing suspects to Angel Duran Drive and Prince Drive. Upon arriving at this location, both suspects abandoned the vehicle and attempted to evade law enforcement on foot.

At a later point, Archuleta brandished a firearm and began shooting at the officers. In response, two officers from Española returned fire, resulting in Archuleta sustaining injuries. He was promptly transported to a hospital and later airlifted to Albuquerque for further medical attention.

According to state police, Archuleta’s injuries are not life-threatening. Unfortunately, Salazar managed to evade capture and is currently wanted for the outstanding burglary warrant and other charges stemming from the events of Tuesday night.

Once Archuleta has been released from the hospital, he will be booked on the charges against him. The police shooting is currently under investigation by state police.
