The La Mesa Police Department received several distressing 911 calls on April 24, 2021, at approximately 12:26 a.m., reporting gunshots fired in the vicinity of 4300 Echo Court in La Mesa, as confirmed by Officer Mark Herring of the San Diego Police Department.

In a swift response, officers arrived at the scene within a mere four minutes and discovered Brown, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, inside the residence at 4306 Echo Court, #A. Brown was immediately rushed to Sharp Memorial Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries during surgery, leaving behind a devastated community mourning the loss of a young and promising life.

The initial investigation revealed that Brown fell victim to a senseless act of violence when he unsuspectingly answered a knock at his front door. Witnesses present inside the apartment at the time recounted that Brown encountered two suspects upon opening the door, leading to an altercation that turned fatally violent. One of the suspects unleashed a barrage of gunshots, striking Brown multiple times before both assailants fled the scene. Authorities believe the suspects fled southbound on Echo Court before turning eastbound onto Echo Drive. The suspects, who remain at large, were described as males wearing ski masks and black hooded sweatshirts.

Corneilius Donte Brown, a dedicated U.S. Navy sailor, was stationed at Naval Base Coronado, where he served his country with honor and distinction. His tragic and untimely death has left a void in the lives of his loved ones and the naval community.
