Local reports reveal that the violence began with six rounds of mortar fire, followed by the use of small firearms. This incident comes on the heels of gunfires between security personnel and militants in Manipur’s border town, Moreh. The clash, which occurred on Sunday, January 7, near the Myanmar border, caused a great deal of panic among the villagers. Firing was reported in Ward 7 and Moreh Bazar, with militants resorting to the use of bombs to target security forces, as confirmed by officials.

This incident follows a previous attack on January 2, where seven security personnel, including four Manipur police commandos and three BSF personnel, sustained injuries while on a search operation. They were subsequently airlifted to Imphal for further medical treatment. Notably, similar gun battles had taken place in the town since December 30. Chief Minister N Biren Singh had expressed concerns that foreign mercenaries from Myanmar might be involved in the attacks in Moreh.

In the midst of these escalating tensions, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to embark on his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Manipur on January 14. Despite initial denials from CM Singh, the Manipur government has granted permission for the flagging off of the yatra, albeit with a limited number of participants. Congress leaders have emphasized that the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will commence from Manipur “at any cost,” and alternative venues are being explored.

Scheduled to commence from Imphal, the capital of Manipur, on January 14, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will cover a distance of 6,713 kilometers across 12 states. The march, led by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, aims to culminate in Mumbai on either March 20 or 21.
