Former Albany Resident Identified as Shooter in Thruway Incident

The individual who engaged in a gunfire exchange with state troopers on the Thruway near exit 15A in the Hillburn-Sloatsburg area has been identified as Rakim Tillery, a 35-year-old former resident of Albany.

Wanted for Attempted Homicide in Albany

The State Police have confirmed that Tillery was the subject of an ongoing investigation for an attempted homicide in Albany earlier on Wednesday, January 3. At approximately 2:50 pm that afternoon, he was spotted driving on the Thruway in the Hillburn/Sloatsburg area.

Troopers Steven Missale and Ronald Raymond promptly initiated a traffic stop after identifying the Mercedes Benz being driven by Rakim Tillery.

Gunfire Erupts

Without hesitation, Tillery opened fire at the troopers as they approached his vehicle.

In the face of imminent danger, both troopers swiftly returned fire, ultimately resulting in the fatal shooting of Tillery.
