Truck Collision and Police Shooting Incident on U.S. 35: Dash Cam Footage Revealed

January 10, (Location) – The release of dash camera footage on Wednesday unveiled a dramatic pursuit on U.S. 35, which culminated in a truck colliding with two police cruisers and the subsequent shooting of the suspect by law enforcement officers.

As a result of the incident, three individuals were transported to the hospital. They include a Trotwood police officer, who was inside one of the cruisers that was struck, the suspect himself, and a woman who was reportedly intentionally targeted by the truck prior to the high-speed chase.

Fortunately, the woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries, whereas both the officer and the suspect were reported to be in stable condition as of Wednesday, according to police authorities.

The dash cam video provides a gripping account of the events that unfolded, capturing the moment when police personnel deployed stop sticks onto U.S. 35 in an effort to halt the suspect’s escape. Although the stop sticks were successfully deployed, it became apparent that they did not immediately deflate the truck’s tires.

Just moments after the deployment, a loud bang resonated as the truck ran over the stop sticks. Dayton Police Chief Kamran Afzal revealed that officers believed the suspect, identified as 54-year-old James Skirvin, had discharged a firearm during the pursuit.

Undeterred by the stop sticks, Skirvin continued driving east on U.S. 35, later executing a U-turn near Abbey Avenue and heading westward.

The footage further demonstrates the relentless pursuit of the white truck by multiple police cruisers. Near Liscum Drive, the truck veered into the right lane of U.S. 35 West before abruptly crossing into the eastbound lanes, ultimately colliding with a Montgomery County sheriff’s cruiser and a Trotwood cruiser.

The truck came to a halt on top of the Trotwood vehicle, leading to a tense standoff. Officers from various departments responded by discharging their firearms in an attempt to neutralize the suspect. In total, seven Dayton officers, four Trotwood officers, and two sheriff’s deputies fired their weapons during the incident, Chief Afzal confirmed.

Following the exchange of gunfire, Skirvin was safely extracted from the truck, and law enforcement officers immediately provided him with medical assistance. Suffering from injuries sustained in the crash as well as gunshot wounds, Skirvin required urgent medical attention, as stated by the Dayton police chief.

Simultaneously, the injured Trotwood officer was carefully removed from the damaged cruiser and promptly transported to the hospital by Dayton police personnel.

Trotwood Police Chief Erik Wilson expressed his optimism regarding the officer’s recovery, stating, “I am hopeful for a speedy recovery for the officer. These individuals are not just colleagues; they become family to us.”

In light of this incident, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been enlisted to conduct a thorough investigation. Furthermore, Trotwood Police Department authorities have initiated an internal investigation to ensure all aspects of the incident are thoroughly examined.

James Skirvin, the suspect involved in the pedestrian strike in Trotwood, is currently facing one count of felonious assault. His bond has been set at $1.5 million, according to records from the Montgomery County Municipal Court – Western Division.
