VERNON HILLS, Ill. – The Lake County Coroner’s Office has officially identified the body found in a retention pond in Vernon Hills as 17-year-old Brissa Romero. The teenager went missing early last week, sparking a search that tragically ended in the discovery of her body. The cause of death, according to the coroner, was drowning with ethanol intoxication as a contributing factor. Toxicology reports also revealed that Brissa tested positive for THC and had a blood alcohol concentration twice the legal limit.

The incident occurred on December 4 when Brissa’s Nissan Rogue plunged into the water. Security footage showed Brissa entering a nearby fast food restaurant and leaving alone a short time later before getting into her vehicle. Less than 15 minutes later, her phone pinged near the location where her submerged vehicle was later recovered.

The search for Brissa began when a pedestrian alerted an officer to a backpack floating on the edge of the pond. Authorities confirmed that the backpack belonged to Brissa, leading them to locate her submerged vehicle in the deepest part of the pond, approximately 20 feet underwater.

Brissa’s family, devastated by the loss, sought solace and prayed at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines. The shrine, a symbol of miracles and strength, provided them with comfort during this difficult time.

Described as a caring and responsible young woman, Brissa was the youngest of five siblings and had recently graduated from Barrington High School. She was studying to become a sonogram nurse at Harper College and was working two jobs to support her education.
