Accident – death – Obituary News : LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The legacy of one of the victims from the Old National Bank shooting in downtown Louisville will be remembered through a generous donation. An anonymous individual has made a remarkable $500,000 contribution to WaterStep in honor of Tommy Elliott and his wife, Maryanne Elliott.

The victims of the tragic incident on April 10, 2023, were identified as Joshua Barrick, 40; Jim Tutt, 64; Tommy Elliott, 63; Juliana Farmer, 45; and Deana Eckert, 57. Tommy Elliott, the senior vice president of Old National Bank, was one of the five innocent lives lost when an employee opened fire in the bank’s downtown branch.

In order to pay tribute to Tommy Elliott and acknowledge the significant donation, WaterStep organized a special event attended by Maryanne Elliott and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a close friend of the late Tommy Elliott. Governor Beshear expressed his admiration for the generous act, stating, “The generosity that we’re witnessing today reflects the incredible generosity of Tommy and Maryanne and all the good they have done.”

WaterStep, a non-profit organization based in Louisville, is dedicated to providing sustainable solutions to solve global water, sanitation, and hygiene crises. Mark Hogg, the CEO of WaterStep, expressed his gratitude for the donation, saying, “This gift has positioned WaterStep to become the solution to provide safe water worldwide. With many of our pilot programs showing significant positive impacts in Africa, we are thrilled about the future opportunities to bring safe water to people all over the world.”

Hogg also revealed that the donation made in honor of the Elliotts has inspired other contributions, nearly quadrupling the amount of money they had hoped for to launch their latest initiative. He assured Maryanne Elliott, “I want you to know that I believe this vision, this moment, goes well beyond any kind of recognition or tribute for you and Tommy. I believe you have inspired an endowment of support, prayer, and the opportunity to make a difference and transform the lives of millions.”

Maryanne Elliott, grateful for the recognition of her late husband’s legacy, expressed her belief that his impact will endure as long as people continue to do good work in the world, both within their own communities and globally.

While the generous donation will undoubtedly bring positive change to those living across the globe, there is also a shared hope among Governor Beshear and Maryanne Elliott to bring change closer to home in Kentucky. Reflecting on the tragic loss of Tommy Elliott and his colleagues at Old National Bank, Governor Beshear acknowledged the profound impact it had on the state, saying, “The day we lost Tommy and his friends and co-workers at Old National, it was one of the toughest days of my life, but I know it was also a very dark day here in Kentucky.”

To address the issue of gun violence and prevent future tragedies, Kentucky Senator Whitney Westerfield, R-Fruit Hill, plans to propose legislation in this session related to red flag laws, also known as Crisis Aversion and Rights Retention (CARR). Two versions of the proposed law were presented by Westerfield in December 2023.

The CARR law would empower courts to temporarily remove guns from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others. However, some conservatives argue that it infringes on Second Amendment rights. Maryanne Elliott, in support of the proposed law, attended the senate judiciary committee meeting where lawmakers discussed CARR. The legislation is also backed by Senator David Yates, D-Louisville, who was a close friend of Tommy Elliott.

Governor Beshear emphasized that red flag laws are not a partisan issue and stressed the urgency for Kentucky to create such a law. He stated, “We trust courts for the custody of our children, surely we can trust them to enforce Second Amendment rights while also protecting the lives of our people. In the case of the Old National Bank shooting, it might have helped, but we know it would have made a difference in other instances.”

Although lawmakers have not yet filed their version of a red flag law, Governor Beshear is also pushing for a bill that prohibits the auctioning of weapons or guns used in murders.

With the generous donation made in honor of Tommy Elliott and the commitment to enact change at both a global and local level, the legacy of the victims of the Old National Bank shooting will continue to inspire positive action and bring hope for a safer future..
