Man Shot and killed by Broward Sheriff’s Deputies in Oakland Park Identified as Alexander Staal

The individual who was fatally shot by deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) during a standoff in Oakland Park on Wednesday has been identified as Alexander Staal, a 51-year-old male.

According to a news release issued by the Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, detectives from the Oakland Park District Crime Suppression Team were actively searching for Staal due to his involvement in a domestic violence incident that occurred on Sunday within the same locality. Staal was wanted for multiple felony charges related to this incident, including attempted kidnapping, burglary of a dwelling with battery, aggravated stalking after injunction for protection, and domestic battery.

The confrontation took place around 2:30 p.m. when Staal was discovered inside his parked car on the 800 block of East Prospect Road. Despite repeated commands by the deputies to surrender peacefully, Staal refused to comply. Consequently, shortly before 3 p.m., a confrontation ensued, forcing the deputies to discharge their weapons, resulting in Staal’s demise.

BSO reported that three deputies fired at Staal, with Oakland Park Fire Rescue subsequently pronouncing him dead at the scene. Fortunately, no deputies sustained any injuries during the incident. As per protocol, the deputies involved have been placed on administrative assignment while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement carries out an investigation into the matter.

Aerial footage captured by various TV news stations depicted a dark-colored SUV with visible bullet holes through its windshield. Shedding light on the incident, BSO spokesperson Carey Codd stated on Wednesday that preliminary information indicated the confrontation occurred outside of the vehicle.

While the Sheriff’s Office has refrained from divulging additional details regarding the nature of the confrontation or the domestic incident that transpired on Sunday, court records indicate that Staal had three prior domestic violence cases in Broward County, as well as one stalking-related case since early 2023.
