A 71-year-old “serial bank robber,” who has already spent decades behind bars, is back in custody after carrying out another heist in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Bruce Edward Bell has been detained following a robbery that took place on December 21 at a bank in the Sun Valley neighborhood. The police report states that Bell allegedly stole over $60,000 in cash during the incident.

Bell, who was released from prison in July 2021 and was on supervised release at the time of his most recent arrest, has a history of bank robbery convictions and has served over 40 years in the Federal Department of Corrections. This latest robbery marks his fifth bank robbery conviction.

During the December robbery, Bell entered the bank and forcibly grabbed an employee, brandishing a firearm. He then coerced the employee to take him to a restricted-access area, threatening to shoot them if they did not comply. Once inside, Bell ordered another employee to fill his bag with cash before making his escape with over $60,000. Surveillance footage released by the Los Angeles Police Department shows the entire ordeal, with Bell pointing the gun at bank employees and demanding money.

Investigators believe that there may be additional victims of robbery by Bell who have yet to be identified. The LAPD has released photographs of Bell in an effort to help identify and speak with anyone who may have been victimized by him. The police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

In the surveillance footage, it is evident that the bank staff complied with Bell’s demands, placing items inside the reusable shopping bag he had brought with him. Throughout the incident, the employees can be seen with their hands raised in surrender. Once Bell left the bank, an individual who had been hiding underneath a desk emerged. Witnesses at the scene immediately called 911 after seeing Bell drive away in a silver Volvo sedan from 2002.

Responding officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Foothill Division located the suspect’s vehicle and conducted a high-risk traffic stop. During the stop, Bell was detained, and a search of his car revealed a black replica firearm and $64,000 in cash. Bell is currently facing a kidnapping charge, and his bail has been set at $1.6 million, according to jail records.

Given Bell’s criminal history and the severity of his crimes, authorities suspect that there may be more victims who have yet to come forward. The LAPD is urging anyone with information about additional robberies committed by Bell to contact them as soon as possible.
