Man Arrested After Stolen Car Crashes into Memphis Police Vehicle, Injuring Officer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a 35-year-old man from Memphis was apprehended following a collision between a stolen car and a Memphis Police Department (MPD) vehicle, resulting in injuries to the officer involved, according to official records.

Delijuan Jones, a resident of Memphis, has been charged with Theft of Property between $2,500-10,000 and Intent to Evade Arrest with Auto Risk of Death, as stated in his arrest affidavit.

The incident occurred at the intersection of American Way and Getwell Road at approximately 2 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, as reported by the MPD.

According to MPD, an officer attempted to stop a Mercedes Benz in the vicinity of Lamar Avenue and Semmes Street in Parkway Village, but the vehicle failed to comply. The officer then deactivated the police lights, leading to a pursuit.

The pursuit ultimately concluded at American Way and Getwell Road, a few miles away from the initial chase location, where the two vehicles collided, as confirmed by MPD sources.

Following the crash, Jones and a passenger identified as Brenda Williams, who was also in the stolen Mercedes, were detained. Subsequent investigations revealed that the vehicle had indeed been reported stolen.

Jones was promptly transported to a hospital for medical evaluation, although his injuries were not deemed severe. Williams, on the other hand, refused any medical assistance. MPD disclosed that Williams had outstanding warrants for her arrest, but provided no further details.

The officer involved in the collision was taken to a hospital in a non-critical condition. Additionally, the officer was cited for “failure to maintain a safe lookout” during the pursuit, as per police statements.
