CHENNAI: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 24-year-old man allegedly murdered his ex-boyfriend and subsequently died by suicide at Mogappair in Chennai. The man, identified as Vanjinathan from Ambattur, had decided to end the relationship after his family arranged his marriage with a woman, according to the police. The victim was identified as Lokesh, aged 25, from Aminjikarai.

Lokesh worked at a call centre while Vanjinathan was employed as a software engineer at a private company in Thoraipakkam. The pair had met through an online dating portal for men and had been in a relationship for over a year. However, their families discovered their relationship and confronted them. Despite their families’ objections, Vanjinathan’s family insisted on arranging his marriage with a woman from their hometown, leading to him breaking off the relationship with Lokesh, as stated by a senior police officer.

The family proceeded with the marriage proposal and even held an engagement ceremony. Following this, Vanjinathan ended his relationship with Lokesh. However, Lokesh continued to persistently insist on meeting Vanjinathan, resulting in heated arguments over the phone for the past two weeks, according to the parents of both individuals.

On Tuesday, Lokesh failed to return home by evening and his mobile phone was switched off. Concerned, his parents lodged a complaint at the Aminjikarai police station. Meanwhile, Vanjinathan’s parents were also searching for him and reached out to Lokesh’s family. During this time, Vanjinathan’s sister received a voice note from him expressing his intention to end his life, further adding to the distress of the situation, the police said.

Using the mobile phone records, the police managed to trace the two men to a lodge in Paneer Nagar in Mogappair West. Authorities recovered the bodies of both Vanjinathan and Lokesh from the room and sent them to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination. Nolambur police have registered a case and initiated inquiries. After a preliminary investigation, the police concluded that the two men likely engaged in a fight inside the room and, during the altercation, Vanjinathan strangled Lokesh with a shoelace before taking his own life.

Arrests Made in Land Forgery Case

On a separate note, two individuals were arrested by the Central Crime Branch-Avadi on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in a land forgery case. The suspects, identified as E Pooncholai (36) from Thiruvannamalai and B Prem Kumar (36) from Puthagaram, were apprehended after swindling a 61-year-old man of a plot measuring 4,793 sq.ft, worth Rs 1.5 crore, located in Kallikuppam, Ambattur.

The victim, Rajaram (61) from Ambattur, had planned to construct a building on his property. However, during the documentation process, he discovered that a woman named Viji had obtained an encumbrance certificate for the land using forged documents, falsely claiming to be Rajaram’s sister.

Subsequently, Viji sold portions of the land to three other individuals. Rajaram promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrests of the two men who allegedly aided Viji in forging the documents. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
