20-Year-Old Woman Charged with Homicide after Feeding Baby Water Beads and Batteries

In a horrifying incident that recently shook western Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old woman from New Castle has been accused of killing her boyfriend’s 18-month-old baby girl. Aleisia Owens is now facing charges of criminal homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault of a child, endangering the welfare of a child, and other offenses, according to the state attorney general’s office.

The tragic incident occurred in June 2023, when the child, identified as Iris Alfera, lost her life. The cause of death, as revealed in the coroner’s report, was fatal levels of acetone in her blood, leading to organ failure. The report unequivocally ruled it a homicide, prompting an investigation by both the New Castle police and the attorney general’s office.

The shocking revelation came to light that Owens had allegedly fed the young girl water beads and batteries, resulting in her untimely demise. Water beads, commonly used as sensory toys for children, are small plastic balls that expand when soaked in water. However, in this tragic case, the innocent child fell victim to the harmful effects of these seemingly harmless objects.

During their investigation, authorities discovered that Owens had extensively researched substances that could cause harm to children. Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry expressed her concern, stating, “The investigation shows that, for months, the defendant conducted meticulous research on how certain substances harm children. She then allegedly acted on her findings.”

The disturbing details continue to emerge as it was revealed that months prior to her death, Iris had already been hospitalized after ingesting various dangerous objects, including water beads, batteries, and even a screw. This previous incident should have served as a warning sign, highlighting the need for immediate intervention and protection for the vulnerable child.

The attorney general’s office revealed that Owens’ cellphone history contained alarming web searches for household products that could potentially harm or even kill a child. Some of the phrases used in her searches included “beauty products that are poisonous to kids” and “medications leading to accidental poisoning deaths in children.” This disturbing evidence suggests premeditation and a callous disregard for the well-being of the child in question.

On June 25, 2023, an ambulance was called to the Lawrence County home of Iris’ father, Bailey Jacoby. It was there that the unresponsive baby was discovered, leading to her hospitalization. Despite efforts to save her life, Iris tragically succumbed to her injuries four days later. It is important to note that Jacoby has not been charged in connection with the case, and the child’s mother remains as one of the grieving survivors.
