A woman Maoist, who was involved in several criminal cases including an IED blast in Odisha, has surrendered before the police in Malkangiri district. The Maoist, identified as Ungi Madvi alias Rosni, carried a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on her head, according to Malkangiri SP Nitesh Wadhwani.

Ungi Madvi, an active member of the banned CPI (Maoist) party, hails from Sukma district in Chhattisgarh. She joined the party in 2016 and operated as a member of Mahupadar in the Kanger Ghati area of the Darbha division of DKSZC (Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee).

Having been involved in at least 48 cases in Odisha, Ungi carried a hefty cash reward on her head. Malkangiri SP Nitesh Wadhwani hailed her surrender as a significant achievement, as she had been actively involved in various incidents in Odisha for the past eight years. He also mentioned that she was active in neighbouring states.

Reasons for surrender

According to SP Wadhwani, recent appeals made by the Chief Minister and DGP of Odisha to active Maoists, urging them to leave the path of violence and surrender for the peaceful development of the region, played a crucial role in motivating Ungi to surrender.

Malkangiri district has witnessed the surrender of 21 active Maoists and hundreds of Maoist sympathisers over the past two years, indicating a positive shift towards peace and development in the region. SP Wadhwani highlighted that only a few Maoist cadres remain, and they too are eager to surrender.

Ungi had long aspired to surrender, as she became disillusioned with the Maoist ideology. However, senior leaders of the party did not allow her to leave and forced her to carry out critical tasks against her will, revealed the SP.

Perception change and the path to rehabilitation

The surrendered Maoist, Ungi, stated that witnessing various developmental activities initiated by the state government made her realize the futility of the violent path of Naxalism. She acknowledged that Maoists hinder the region’s development through their subversive activities, manipulating innocent tribals into fighting amongst themselves. Once their purpose is served, they are mercilessly branded as police informers and killed.

SP Wadhwani reiterated the appeal to active Maoist cadres and militias to join mainstream society. He assured that Ungi would be properly rehabilitated and receive monetary assistance as per the surrender and rehabilitation scheme of the Odisha government. She would also be provided financial support for housing, pursuing education, and receiving vocational training based on her preferences.
