In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded in Kalyan on Sunday evening, a 26-year-old man took the extreme step of ending his life by jumping into a nearby pond. The cause behind this unfortunate act was said to be the rejection he faced from a girl whom he deeply loved. Two hours later, the girl also attempted suicide but was fortunately saved by vigilant local residents, as reported by the Kolsewadi police.

The deceased has been identified as Mahesh Patil, a 26-year-old resident of the Nandivli area in Kalyan East. This incident has left the entire community in shock and sorrow.

Namdev Chaudhary, Chief of Kalyan Fire Station, shared details about the distressing incident, stating, “We received a distress call at 6.45 pm regarding a man, approximately aged between 25 to 30, who had jumped into the pond. Upon receiving the call, we immediately rushed to the spot and informed the local Kolsewadi police station.” Chaudhary added that after a three-hour-long search operation, Patil’s lifeless body was retrieved from the pond with the assistance of local residents.

The body was subsequently transferred to Rukhmani Bai Hospital in Kalyan for necessary medical procedures and post-mortem examinations. The Kolsewadi police have initiated a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

Fire officials revealed that the pond where the incident occurred was previously a quarry, and it often attracts local residents who visit the area for sightseeing purposes. It was a bystander who witnessed the man’s fateful jump into the pond and promptly alerted the fire personnel and local police.

Shockingly, a few hours after the initial incident, the girl involved in this heartbreaking story also attempted to take her own life. Fortunately, due to the quick response of alert local residents, she was rescued from the pond, saving her life. Confirming this development, Rajesh Shirshat, Senior Police Inspector at Kolsewadi Police Station, shed light on the situation, saying, “Initial investigations suggest that the boy had proposed to the girl, but she rejected his advances. Distraught by her rejection, he threatened to end his life if she didn’t accept his proposal. Subsequently, he jumped into the pond. Later, the girl followed suit and jumped into the same pond. However, thanks to the intervention of locals, she was pulled out, thus averting a tragic end. Further investigations are currently underway.”
