Tragic End for Horse Struck by Vehicle on U.S. Route 30 in Stark County

In a devastating incident that unfolded early Sunday morning, a horse lost its life after being hit by a vehicle on U.S. Route 30 in western Stark County, as reported by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The Unfortunate Encounter

At approximately 3:47 a.m., troopers swiftly responded to a one-car crash involving a horse, according to Sgt. Bridget Matt. This unfortunate event unfolded when three horses managed to escape in the vicinity, with two of them being successfully captured.

The Collision and its Consequences

Upon investigation, Sgt. Matt revealed that a 2015 Ford Focus, traveling westbound on Route 30, collided with one of the horses that was running on the roadway. The collision occurred just west of Pigeon Run Avenue, after the driver made a desperate attempt to avoid the animals. Tragically, the horse succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash.

The Fate of the Driver

The driver of the Ford Focus, a 40-year-old Creston man, fortunately emerged from the incident unharmed. Despite the traumatic nature of the collision, the driver escaped without any physical injuries.

As the investigation continues, it remains unclear how the horses managed to escape their confines. Ohio State Highway Patrol is diligently working to uncover the circumstances that led to the horses gaining their freedom. The ongoing investigation aims to shed light on this mysterious occurrence.

A Chase Ensues

At the scene of the crash, troopers located the remaining horses, which were described as black standardbred horses housed at the owner’s residence. However, these animals swiftly fled north on state Route 21. Despite the concerted efforts of the troopers to pursue them, the horses vanished from sight near Lake Avenue and Earl Road in Massillon.

A Successful Rescue Mission

To locate the two remaining horses, Copper Horse Crusade of Tuscarawas Township joined forces with the Massillon Police Department. With their combined efforts, the search mission proved fruitful, and the two horses were successfully located. In addition, Flesher’s Deadstock Removal of Norton provided assistance in the removal and proper disposal of the deceased horse.
