Accident – Death – Obituary News : Rock Painted in Memory of Ahmir Joliff, Victim of Iowa School Shooting

A tragic incident unfolded on January 4 in a rural Iowa school when a 17-year-old opened fire, resulting in the death of 11-year-old Ahmir Joliff and injuries to seven others. The shooter, identified as Dylan Butler, used a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun during the attack. The incident took place on the first day back to school after the Christmas break in Perry, Iowa, a town with a population of around 7,800 located 30 miles northwest of Des Moines.

Prior to the shooting, the suspect had reportedly posted on TikTok from inside the bathroom of Perry High School. The post included an image captioned “now we wait” accompanied by the song “Stray Bullet” by the German band KMFDM. Investigators have also discovered other photos of the shooter posing with firearms. This choice of song and the use of firearms in social media posts draws eerie parallels to the infamous 1999 Columbine High School massacre, where the shooters, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, were fans of KMFDM and used the same song on their website.

During a press conference, Iowa DCI Assistant Director of Field Operations, Mitch Mortvedt, revealed that authorities found an improvised explosive device, which was safely defused. This similarity to the failed attempts by the Columbine shooters to use crude explosive devices further highlights the connection between the two incidents.

Sadly, this is not the first time a school shooter has referenced Columbine through KMFDM. In 2007, an 18-year-old in Finland shot eight people at Jokela High in Tuusula before taking his own life. The shooter, Pekka Eric Auvinen, also posted a video on YouTube featuring the song “Stray Bullet.”

In response to the tragedy, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds expressed her condolences and assured the Perry community that the state would work tirelessly to prevent such incidents from happening again. However, it should be noted that in 2021, Iowa’s Republican-led state loosened gun laws, making handgun carry permits and background checks on unlicensed sales optional. This decision has faced criticism, especially in light of the rising numbers of gun violence.

The shooting in Perry, Iowa occurred just a few weeks before the Iowa caucuses, which mark the beginning of the 2024 election season. Republican candidates campaigning in Iowa commented on the shooting, but many downplayed the significance of the violence and attributed it to mental health issues rather than advocating for stricter gun laws.

While politicians debate the appropriate response to such tragedies, the family of Ahmir Joliff mourns the loss of their beloved son. Known as “Smiley” in his home, Ahmir was a cheerful and kind-hearted child who loved playing soccer, the tuba, and singing in the choir. His funeral is scheduled to take place on January 11, one week after the shooting.

As the nation grapples with yet another act of gun violence, it is clear that immediate action is needed to address the underlying issues and prevent such tragedies from happening again..
