Identification of Pedestrian killed in Hit-and-Run

Authorities have released the identity of the pedestrian who tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run accident on Harbor Boulevard in Ventura last week.

The victim, Peter Bashkiroff, was 75 years old and described as unsheltered. According to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office, his death was ruled an accident.

The incident occurred on January 3, around 10 p.m. The pedestrian was struck on Harbor, north of Schooner Drive, near the Ventura Harbor. The driver responsible for the collision fled the scene.

Responding officers discovered Peter Bashkiroff’s lifeless body at the accident site.

As of Tuesday, no arrests have been made in connection with the hit-and-run. However, the Ventura Police Department is actively investigating the case, stated Cmdr. Sarah Heard.

Arrests Made in Fillmore Graffiti Cases

Deputies in Fillmore have recently apprehended two individuals involved in separate felony graffiti incidents.

On Monday, an 18-year-old Fillmore resident was taken into custody for allegedly vandalizing city property. Additionally, a 31-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for suspected graffiti crimes targeting several businesses in Fillmore.

Detectives from the Fillmore station noticed a surge in graffiti on city property in December. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, which provides police services in the city, revealed that evidence from several locations indicated the presence of gang-related messages and nicknames. The estimated damage caused by the graffiti amounted to hundreds of dollars. The 18-year-old suspect was identified by authorities.

On Monday, patrol deputies and detectives located the teenager in the 1900 block of Old Telegraph Road. He was found in possession of evidence linking him to the graffiti crimes. Subsequently, detectives obtained a search warrant for his residence, situated in the same block, and discovered additional incriminating evidence.

The 18-year-old suspect has been arrested on charges of felony vandalism and street terrorism. He is currently being held in county jail, with bail set at $100,000.

In a separate case, deputies responded to a vandalism incident in progress at a business in the 900 block of West Ventura Street on Sunday, around 10:15 p.m. The suspect, a 31-year-old Fillmore man who was already on probation for similar offenses, was identified by responding deputies. He was found in possession of spray paint cans and was subsequently arrested for felony vandalism and probation violation.

Further investigation led to the discovery of additional businesses and city property that had been vandalized by the same suspect. The total estimated damage caused by the graffiti amounted to hundreds of dollars. The man is currently held in county jail without bail, according to jail records.

Burglary Suspects Apprehended on New Year’s Day

The Santa Paula Police Department arrested a man and a woman around 1:30 a.m. on January 1 in connection with a burglary at a hardware store.

Officers responded to Miner’s Ace Hardware located at 568 Main St. after an employee reported the incident and provided surveillance footage. The suspects had initially fled the scene but were later spotted loitering in an alley nearby, as captured on the store’s surveillance video.

The police detained the two suspects, a 43-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man from Ventura, upon their return to the area. The stolen tools were found hidden in close proximity.

Both individuals were arrested on charges of burglary, conspiracy, and narcotics violations. They were subsequently booked into county jail.

Santa Paula Interim Police Chief Don Aguilar emphasized the vital role played by the store employee in promptly reporting the incident and providing access to the surveillance video, which greatly facilitated the swift apprehension of the suspects.
