Remembering Joseph Zephries: A Life Full of Ambition

The girlfriend of Joseph Zephries, a 20-year-old man who tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while performing utility work in Huntley, remembers him as a young man who was “full of life.” The incident occurred on Monday around 3:09 p.m. near the intersection of Main Street and Coyne Station Road.

According to Huntley Deputy Police Chief Linda Hooten, the report stated that Zephries was struck by a vehicle while carrying out his work along the roadway. Emergency services from the Huntley Fire Protection District arrived at the scene and discovered Zephries unconscious and not breathing. They immediately administered lifesaving measures and rushed him to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley.

Tragically, Joseph Zephries succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The police shut down Main Street at Coyne Station Road for approximately five hours to conduct a preliminary investigation into the crash.

The incident involved a 2023 Kia Forte traveling eastbound on Main Street, according to Hooten. Zephries, who was a USIC worker, was on the south shoulder of the road performing utility line location services at the time of the accident.

The USIC spokesperson expressed their deepest condolences and offered support to Zephries’ family and friends during this difficult time. The company is cooperating closely with the investigators as they review the incident.

Angelina Madrid, Zephries’ girlfriend, spoke to ABC7 and described him as an ambitious and mature young man. She said, “He was a go-getter and so full of life. He had a level of maturity beyond his age.”

The driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old man from Chicago, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigators. Hooten stated that drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. As of now, no charges have been filed as the full crash reconstruction investigation is still ongoing.

The police would like to remind drivers about Scott’s Law, also known as the “Move Over” law, which requires motorists to slow down and move over, if possible, when approaching any vehicle with their emergency or hazard lights activated on the side of the roadway.

Chief Linda Hooten expressed her condolences to the families involved and the entire community as they grieve this tragic loss.
