The deceased have been identified as Jonathan Leland James, 37 years old, and Graham R. Shure, 27 years old, both residents of Keaau.

The fatal incident took place in the early hours of February 5, 2023, at the intersection of Waikoloa Road and Queen Kaahumanu Highway. According to the preliminary investigation conducted by the responding officers, the collision involved a single vehicle, a gray 2014 Jeep Cherokee, driven by James. The vehicle was traveling north on Queen Kaahumanu Highway when it suddenly veered off the roadway and collided with a substantial metal traffic light post.

Tragically, the impact caused the Jeep Cherokee to ignite into flames, leaving James and Shure trapped inside. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, both individuals succumbed to their injuries. A third occupant, a 27-year-old man from Honokaa, was able to escape from the burning vehicle. He was promptly transported to Kona Community Hospital for medical evaluation and has since recovered from the incident.
