Police Provide New Details on Dayton Pursuit and Shots Fired Incident

Authorities have released additional information regarding the pursuit that occurred in Dayton on Monday, resulting in shots being fired. The incident unfolded at approximately 10:54 a.m. when officers responded to a report of an assault at the Voyager Village trailer park homes in Trotwood. According to reports, a man had struck a female relative with his truck. As officers arrived at the scene, they immediately located the victim and began rendering aid. However, the situation took a dangerous turn when the suspect sped past officers, brandishing a long weapon as he fled.

Chase Ensues as Trotwood Police Attempt to Apprehend Suspect

Upon witnessing the suspect’s attempt to evade arrest, Trotwood officers initiated pursuit. The suspect, identified as 54-year-old James Skirvin, turned onto U.S. Route 35 and recklessly swerved into oncoming traffic, endangering both himself and others on the road. Multiple law enforcement agencies joined in the chase to apprehend the suspect and mitigate the potential threat he posed.

Suspect Opens Fire on Officers During Pursuit

“At Abbey and US-35, the suspect suddenly executed a U-turn and began heading back westbound on US-35, all while firing shots at the pursuing officers from his moving vehicle,” revealed Trotwood Police Chief Erik Wilson. The pursuit eventually came to an end at the intersection of Liscum Drive and US-35, where the suspect forcefully crossed all lanes of the road, colliding with a Trotwood police cruiser and an unoccupied vehicle belonging to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Police Respond with Gunfire and Apprehend Suspect

In response to the imminent threat posed by the suspect, law enforcement officers discharged their firearms, effectively neutralizing the suspect. James Skirvin was promptly taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Authorities have disclosed that Skirvin has no known criminal history in the local area but has been cited for several minor traffic infractions in Dayton. It has also been revealed that Skirvin had previously resided in northern Kentucky and was frequently traveling between Florida and Ohio.

Officer and Victim Receive Medical Attention

The Trotwood officer who was in the cruiser that was struck during the incident was also transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, the officer is in stable condition, according to Chief Wilson. The female victim, who is related to the suspect, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.

Collaborative Effort and Investigations Underway

Authorities have confirmed that officers from the Dayton Police Department, Trotwood Police Department, and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the pursuit and subsequent incident. A total of seven Dayton officers, four Trotwood officers, and two Montgomery County sheriff’s officers discharged their firearms during the confrontation. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will take the lead in conducting an external investigation, while each agency involved will carry out an internal investigation to ensure that proper protocols were followed.
