On December 3, authorities responded to a distress call just before 4:45 p.m. at a banana farm located on Kauhiula Road, situated above Alae Cemetery. The report indicated an unresponsive man seated in a vehicle at the scene.

The victim has since been identified as 68-year-old Albert Harry Pacheco Sr, a resident of Hilo and an employee at the farm. Pacheco was discovered lifeless inside his own vehicle.

At first, no signs of foul play were evident to the police. However, on December 8, during the autopsy, the forensic pathologist made a shocking discovery – a single gunshot wound to the victim’s upper thigh.

Subsequently, the investigation took an unexpected turn, prompting the authorities to reclassify the case as a second-degree murder. Despite conducting interviews with numerous witnesses, including employees of the banana farm and neighboring properties, the police have struggled to ascertain a motive or identify a suspect.
