Harrietta Man Charged After Allegedly Shooting and Killing Service Dog

In a distressing incident, a man from Harrietta, identified as Douglas Barnes, has been charged after allegedly using a rifle to shoot and kill a service dog in Colfax Township, Wexford County. Michigan State Police have confirmed Barnes’ arraignment in the 84th District Court on charges of killing/torturing animals and reckless/negligent use of a firearm.

Tragic Incident in Colfax Township

The incident took place on November 27, 2023, at approximately 5:20 p.m., when a trooper received a report about a service dog named Smokey being shot while walking off-leash in his owner’s driveway. Smokey, an AKC registered German Shepherd and a registered service dog, met a tragic fate despite wearing a black collar and his owner having an illuminated headlamp.

The dog’s owner, upon hearing a gunshot while walking Smokey at dusk, made the devastating discovery of the lifeless canine. Confronting Douglas Barnes, who was attempting to leave the area in a truck, the owner learned that Barnes believed he had shot a coyote.

A Detailed Investigation Unveils the Weapon and Distance Involved

State police conducted a thorough investigation into the incident and revealed that Barnes had used a 7MM Browning Model 81 lever action rifle with a Bushnell Banner Power Scope, set at a 3X zoom. The distance from Barnes’ position to the center of the driveway, where Smokey was shot, was approximately 104 yards.

Legal Proceedings and Court Appearance

An arrest warrant was issued for Douglas Barnes on December 29, following which he turned himself in at the Wexford County Jail on January 5. Barnes was granted a personal recognizance bond, and his next court appearance has been scheduled for January 23 at 2 p.m.
