Grieving Family Seeks Answers After Tragic Triple Homicide in Vance County Home

A heartbroken family is desperately searching for answers following the shocking discovery of their loved ones found dead in a residence in Vance County over the weekend. The victims have been identified as 49-year-old Danielle Williams, 25-year-old Tre’von Hargrove, and 47-year-old Juan Black.

Vance County deputies stumbled upon the gruesome scene during a routine welfare check. Sylvia Black, who is Juan Black’s mother, revealed that Tre’von Hargrove was Danielle Williams’ son. Deeply concerned after failed attempts to reach Juan and Williams over the phone, Sylvia and Williams’ daughter decided to meet at the Abbott Road home.

As Sylvia approached the house, she caught a glimpse of Juan through a window, but he remained unresponsive. Worried, they contacted the authorities. Sylvia recalls the harrowing moment when the sheriff arrived, saying, “I guess he had more sense than we did. He grabbed the doorknob and looked at her and said, ‘it’s not locked.’ He pushed, and the door wouldn’t open very far. He said, ‘there’s a body lying in front of the door.'”

Overwhelmed with grief, Sylvia Black admitted that she sensed something terribly wrong, stating, “In that moment, I just lost it. I knew something bad had happened.” Vance County deputies later confirmed that all three victims had been shot to death.

Sylvia Black and Danielle Williams had a close bond as former colleagues. In fact, Williams had been invited to the family reunion in August, where she met Juan for the first time. Sylvia fondly recalls the loving relationship they had, saying, “They were a sweet, sweet couple. They loved each other; you could tell that they thought a lot of each other.”

As time went on, Juan Black also formed a strong connection with Tre’von Hargrove. Hargrove, who was autistic and socially withdrawn, found solace and friendship in Juan. Sylvia Black remarked, “Danielle’s son was autistic…He wasn’t very social…My son just kind of drew him out of that little shell.”

Juan’s aunt, LaSonya Glover, expressed her shock at the tragic incident, highlighting the victims’ popularity within the community. “He was more than a nephew; he was more like a brother to me,” Glover said. “I don’t think you can meet anybody who has bad words to say about him. Everybody loved all of them. They were good-hearted people.”

When asked about the possible motive behind the crime and if Juan was specifically targeted, Glover expressed her confusion, saying, “I have no earthly idea why anyone would want to harm him. He didn’t make enemies. That’s what makes it so hard for us, trying to figure out who would have done something like this to him.”

It has come to light that Danielle Williams was an employee of the city of Durham, working in both Human Resources and Waste Management since late 2021. The Vance County Sheriff’s Office believes this to be an isolated incident, although it remains unclear if they are actively searching for a suspect. In order to assist with the investigation, the sheriff’s office has requested the aid of the State Bureau of Investigation.

Respecting the family’s request for privacy, Williams’ family declined an interview with WRAL.
