A Florida Highway Patrol trooper demonstrated quick thinking and bravery when confronted with a reckless driver behind the wheel of a black Maserati Ghibli in Miami Gardens. The trooper, accompanied by his vigilant K-9 partner, efficiently reported the driver’s erratic maneuvers while ensuring public safety.
On Tuesday, the Florida Highway Patrol released five videos recorded from the trooper’s vehicle during the pursuit that took place on December 27. The driver, later identified as 20-year-old Rodrigo Perez, led authorities on a wild chase through Miami Gardens. Detectives later discovered that Perez was in possession of a loaded black Glock 17 with an extended magazine containing 31 live rounds of 9mm ammunition.
According to records, the pursuit began in the vicinity of Northwest 22 Avenue and 175 Street and ended in a head-on collision on the State Road 826 ramp at Northwest Seventh Avenue.
The arrest report indicates that Perez recklessly evaded police by disregarding red lights, driving over grassy medians, and even driving the wrong way. The pursuit ended when Perez crashed into an unmarked police car. During the incident, Perez opened the driver’s side door while clutching the Glock in his right hand and dropped it onto the Maserati’s floorboard.
The FHP dash cam videos vividly capture the moment two police officers, donning bulletproof vests, sprinted towards the Maserati, swiftly apprehending Perez.
Perez now faces multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding police, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, fleeing and eluding a police car with lights and siren, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, openly carrying a weapon, and reckless driving.
While the FHP did not disclose the trooper’s identity in the videos, they commended his actions in bringing the pursuit to a safe conclusion.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding this case to contact Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
