Preliminary investigations suggest that the motive behind the brutal murder was a dispute over ₹2,000 between the victim and one of the alleged attackers, according to the police.

The arrested attackers revealed to the police that the deceased, identified as Gaurav Singh alias Lambu and a resident of Gautampuri, had borrowed the money a few weeks ago but failed to repay it despite repeated demands.

In a publicly released 27-second CCTV video clip, three individuals are seen fleeing into a service lane adjacent to the main road. A police motorcycle can be observed crossing the road, with the pillion rider, wearing a black jacket and holding a diary, disembarking from the moving bike and pursuing the suspects.

Two of the suspects manage to escape into another lane, while the third suspect, upon spotting the approaching policeman, retreats in the same direction he came from, as depicted in the CCTV footage.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Rajesh Deo stated that the Badarpur police station received information from a head constable around 2 am on Wednesday, alerting them that he, along with another head constable, had witnessed three to four individuals dragging an injured and unconscious man at Meet Chowk in Gautampuri.

Upon noticing the patrolling policemen, the suspects abandoned the injured man and fled towards BIW Colony, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) campus. One of the policemen initiated a chase, while the other swiftly raised the alarm, alerting his colleagues in the vicinity.

The Station House Officer (SHO) of Badarpur, along with his police personnel, promptly rushed to the scene and joined in the pursuit. Eventually, three suspects were apprehended near NTPC Gate-1, Deo confirmed.

“Two of them were juveniles, aged 16 and 17, while the third suspect was identified as 18-year-old Armaan Kurru. The trio confessed that they had engaged in a fight with Gaurav over a monetary dispute and sought personal vengeance. The other two individuals who managed to flee were also involved. They collectively stabbed Gaurav multiple times, resulting in his untimely demise. They were in the process of dragging the body away when our patrolling team spotted them,” explained the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

The remaining two suspects were subsequently apprehended later in the day, one of whom was also a minor. The fifth suspect was identified as 18-year-old Shaid Bondi. All five individuals involved in the crime were residents of Gautampuri and were acquainted with Gaurav, the police added.
