A 22-Year-Old Clerk from Peterborough Charged after Confrontation with Baseball-Bat Wielding Robber

A convenience store clerk, aged 22, from Peterborough has been charged following a brave encounter with a robber armed with a baseball bat. The incident occurred on January 5th at a corner store located near the intersection of King and Bethune streets.

The Peterborough Police Service (PPS) received a distress call around 2:30 a.m. and promptly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a male employee was assisting a customer when a second individual, wielding a baseball bat, forcibly entered the store and demanded cash from the clerk.

The police stated that a struggle immediately ensued between the suspect and the clerk. Unfortunately, during the altercation, the suspect struck the worker with the baseball bat. However, the resilient clerk managed to wrestle the bat away from the assailant who hastily fled the store. The clerk, showing immense courage, pursued the perpetrator onto the sidewalk and repeatedly struck him with the bat.

As a result of the altercation, the suspect sustained significant head injuries and was subsequently admitted to a hospital in Toronto for urgent medical attention. Meanwhile, the brave clerk, whose identity remains undisclosed, received immediate treatment from paramedics at the scene. However, his bravery did not go unrecognized by the authorities, as he was later charged with aggravated assault and appeared in court on January 6th. He is currently being held in custody.

In light of the incident, the police have identified the robbery suspect as a 37-year-old man and intend to charge him with robbery, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon. Additionally, the authorities are keen to speak with a male customer who witnessed the entire incident, and urge him to come forward and provide any relevant information.
