LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – The long-awaited trial of Colton Quade Branning, who stands accused of the murder of Justin Heath Allen in 2021, has finally commenced on Tuesday, January 9. This significant development comes nearly three years after the tragic incident.

Branning faces serious charges in relation to the shooting death of Allen, whose lifeless body was discovered at the 4500 block of Clark Boulevard back in February 2021. Initial reports had also linked Branning to alleged involvement in both human and drug smuggling activities, particularly within the Laredo area.

A Detailed Account of the Trial Proceedings

During the morning session of the trial, the state presented a compelling case, with an investigator providing a comprehensive account of the crime scene. The exhibits showcased included photographs that depicted the gunshot wounds sustained by Allen, as well as spent casings, a smoking pipe, a surgical mask, a baseball cap, and a pack of cigarettes that were discovered in close proximity to the victim’s body.

The investigator also shed light on the Gunshot Residue (GSR) test that was conducted on the victim’s hand, which aimed to rule out suicide by determining the absence of gunpowder residue. Additionally, the courtroom learned about the unusual location of the crime scene, a desolate area situated at the 4500 block of Clark Boulevard.

Continuing with the state’s presentation, the recovery of a firearm linked to Branning was discussed. This weapon was found discarded in a resident’s trash can. Photographs presented during the trial shed light on Branning’s potentially transient lifestyle, as he was found living out of his car. Furthermore, items recovered from the scene included a Tecos baseball cap, which was identified as belonging to Justin Allen and was discovered in a duffel bag that was associated with the victim.

Subsequently, Investigator Mata took the stand, where he faced probing questions from the Defense regarding his experience. Mata revealed his involvement in 15-20 previous murder cases, including his co-leading role in the present case.

Defense Highlights Key Points and Raises Questions

As the trial progressed, the Defense introduced a photo exhibit featuring the victim, Justin Allen. They also explored the Gunshot Residue test, emphasizing the absence of any injuries beyond the fatal gunshot wound.

The Defense then delved into the topic of DNA testing and discussed the challenges associated with fingerprinting in low light conditions, given the isolated nature of the crime scene.

In an effort to uncover potential motives or contributing factors, conversations with the victim’s family and discussions regarding his drug history were presented. Surprisingly, the Defense revealed that no investigation had been conducted into the victim’s methamphetamine use. Investigator Mata attributed this omission to information suggesting that it was the gunshot wound, rather than methamphetamine, that led to Allen’s untimely demise.

The trial, which is taking place at the 111th District Court, is expected to continue with the presentation of further testimonies and evidence. Court documents have confirmed that evidence related to the case was submitted back in December.
