By PTI

In a devastating incident that unfolded in the town of Mailani in Lakshmipur Kheri, two innocent children lost their lives due to asphyxia caused by a coal fire that was lit in their room to combat the harsh cold weather. The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday night, where the lack of proper ventilation exacerbated the situation, leading to the tragic outcome.

The victims have been identified as Ramesh Vishwakarma, his wife Renu, their daughter Anshika (8), and their son Krishna (7). The family resorted to lighting a coal fire in their room to keep warm during their sleep, unaware of the deadly consequences it would bring.

Early Tuesday morning, Ramesh’s sister-in-law, Uma Devi, knocked on their door only to receive no response. Growing concerned, she alerted the authorities, prompting them to break down the door. To their horror, all four family members were found unconscious. Immediate medical assistance was sought, and they were rushed to the Mailani health centre.

Tragically, despite the efforts of medical professionals, Anshika and Krishna could not be revived and were pronounced dead at the health centre. Ramesh and Renu, however, were transported to the Kheri district hospital for further treatment and observation.

Upon receiving the distressing news, the Mailani police station in-charge, Pankaj Tripathi, revealed that the bodies of the deceased children have been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. This investigation is crucial to provide closure to the grieving family and to prevent such unfortunate incidents from recurring in the future.

Raising Awareness on Safe Heating Methods

This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with improper heating practices, especially during cold winter nights. As winter grips the region with its icy fingers, it is crucial for individuals and families to prioritize safety while keeping warm.

Experts emphasize the importance of proper ventilation in rooms using alternative heating sources like coal fires or wood stoves. Without adequate airflow, toxic gases such as carbon monoxide can accumulate, posing a serious threat to one’s health and even proving fatal, as tragically demonstrated in this incident.

Authorities urge everyone to invest in carbon monoxide detectors and ensure their proper functioning. These devices can provide an early warning in case of dangerous gas build-up, potentially saving lives.

Furthermore, it is recommended to follow safety guidelines and regulations when using heating appliances. This includes maintaining a safe distance from flammable materials, regularly inspecting and cleaning chimneys or vents, and never leaving fires unattended.

Support and Condolences Pour In

The heart-wrenching news of the tragic incident has spread throughout the community, leaving friends, family, and neighbors devastated. Messages of support and condolences have flooded in, as everyone mourns the loss of two innocent lives and prays for the quick recovery of the parents.

The local authorities are providing necessary assistance to the grieving family during this difficult time. Counseling services and emotional support are being offered to help them cope with the immense sorrow and trauma caused by the incident.

Additionally, community organizations and concerned citizens have come forward to extend financial aid and other resources to the affected family, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness.

A Tragic Wake-Up Call

The tragic demise of these two young children serves as a wake-up call for society, demanding increased awareness and precautionary measures when it comes to staying warm during the winter season. It is imperative that homes are equipped with proper heating systems and that individuals are educated about the potential risks associated with alternative heating methods.

As a community, we must come together to ensure the safety and well-being of our loved ones. By taking the necessary steps to prevent such tragedies, we can create a safer environment for everyone, where warmth and comfort are not compromised by avoidable dangers.
