According to the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) in Iowa, the incident took place at approximately 4 a.m. on Monday, January 8. The DCI reports that a Sioux City police officer was parked inside the parking garage at the renowned Hard Rock Casino and Hotel when his vehicle was abruptly struck head-on by a white truck.

Following the collision with the patrol vehicle, the truck proceeded to exit the parking garage and encountered other responding officers. The driver, identified as 55-year-old Salvador Perez-Garcia of Sioux City, intentionally drove into a second Sioux City police vehicle, forcefully ramming it head-on.

According to a press release issued by the DCI, Perez-Garcia then exited the truck wielding a length of chain with a metal object attached, displaying aggressive and threatening behavior.

Despite attempts by the officers to disarm Perez-Garcia, their efforts proved futile. Perez-Garcia, refusing to comply with the officers’ commands, continued to approach them while swinging the object menacingly.

In response to the imminent danger, Sioux City officers discharged their firearms, striking Perez-Garcia. Although officers promptly administered life-saving measures, Perez-Garcia succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

At present, the names of the officers involved in the incident are being withheld. Sioux City Police Chief Rex Mueller has confirmed that the officers in question have been placed on paid administrative leave until a thorough investigation is completed. Mueller further clarified that only one officer sustained injuries during the confrontation, resulting from the collision between their patrol car and Perez-Garcia’s vehicle.

Sioux City Police sought the assistance of the Iowa DCI to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. Concurrently, the Sioux City Police Department has initiated a parallel investigation to determine if any department policies were violated.

Following the conclusion of the DCI’s investigation, the findings will be submitted to the Woodbury County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office for review.
