Woman Arrested in Ocala for Fatally Striking Bicyclist

OCALA, Fla. — A woman from Ocala was taken into custody on Monday after allegedly hitting and killing a bicyclist while driving under the influence.

Ocala police officers responded to reports of a collision between a car and a bicyclist on Sunday evening at around 6:35 p.m. The incident took place in the 3100 block of NW Blitchton Rd.

Tragically, the bicyclist, identified as 61-year-old Louis Osiel, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

In order to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash, Ocala police closed all westbound lanes of NW Blitchton Rd., stretching from NW 27th Ave. to 32nd Ave., for several hours.

Driver Identified and Arrested

Authorities were able to identify the driver of the car as 43-year-old Elizabeth Pizzonia. After fleeing the scene initially, she promptly returned.

Upon her return, responding officers noted several signs indicating that Pizzonia was impaired. She exhibited bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and emitted the smell of alcohol from her breath, according to the police department.

Pizzonia was subjected to multiple field sobriety tests, which she failed. Additionally, she refused to provide a blood sample for testing or cooperate with a mandatory breath test.

Consequently, investigators arrested Pizzonia on charges of DUI-manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death. She is currently being held without bond at the Marion County jail.

The tragic loss of Louis Osiel has left the local community in shock and mourning. His family and friends are devastated by the sudden and senseless loss of a loved one.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward and assist in the case.
