The WCSO disclosed that they received a distressing 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence in the 300 block of County Road 317 just before midnight. This residential area lies outside the City of Georgetown, a peaceful suburb located north of Austin.

Upon receiving the call, deputies promptly arrived at the scene and made the shocking discovery of the lifeless bodies of Alfred and Susan Carnes inside their home. Seth Carnes, the couple’s son, reportedly confessed to the heinous act and was subsequently apprehended. He is currently being held without bond at the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, facing charges of capital murder.

The WCSO revealed in their press release, “Upon entry into the home, detectives discovered the bodies of Susan and Alfred Carnes, both having suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The initial investigation indicates that the tragic incident resulted from a disagreement that escalated into a violent domestic dispute.” The case has now been referred to the District Attorney’s Office for criminal prosecution.

Ensuring the safety of the local community, the WCSO maintained a presence at the crime scene throughout the early hours of Tuesday morning. They also urged the public to steer clear of the vicinity. Reassuringly, they emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to public safety at this time.

Alfred “Burt” Carnes hailed from a family with a rich law enforcement background in Texas, including an FBI agent as his father and relatives serving as Texas Rangers, Border Patrol Agents, and a Wilson County sheriff, as reported by the Austin American-Statesman. Burt Carnes had an illustrious career, being reelected an impressive six times before retiring from the 368th District Court in 2013. With a remarkable tenure spanning 24 years, he held one of the longest judicial positions in the history of Williamson County, according to the Statesman report.

This tragic incident has left the community in a state of shock and mourning, as they grapple with the loss of a respected former judge and his beloved wife. The investigation into this heart-wrenching crime continues, and the community eagerly awaits justice for the Carnes family.
