Rockford Police Release Body Camera Footage of Fatal Shooting
The Rockford Police Department has recently made public the body camera footage of a tragic incident involving one of their officers, Officer Michael Rhein. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 24, 2023, in an apartment located in the 1300 block of Charles St, resulting in the death of Patrick R. Kirby.

In the body camera footage captured by Officer Rhein, he can be seen alongside another Rockford police officer outside the apartment in response to a distress call from a 911 caller. The caller reported hearing distressing phrases such as “help me” and “kill me” repeatedly coming from her neighbor, who was later identified as Kirby, through the vents.
The video reveals Officer Rhein knocking on the apartment door numerous times, repeatedly calling out Kirby’s name in an attempt to establish contact. In a professional and calm manner, Officer Rhein can be heard saying, “Patrick, it’s the police. We’re just checking on you.”
As the footage continues, Officer Rhein opens the door while addressing Kirby once again by his name. However, upon Kirby’s appearance in the doorway, Officer Rhein notices that he is holding both a knife and a box cutter. Concerned for their safety, Officer Rhein instructs Kirby to “put that down” and cease approaching them.
Despite Officer Rhein’s repeated warnings and commands, Kirby continues to advance towards the officers. Fearing for their lives, Officer Rhein firmly shouts “don’t” before firing three rounds at Kirby, striking him in the chest.

Following the shooting, immediate medical attention was provided to Kirby by the officers. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and later passed away.
At present, the Winnebago Boone Integrity Task Force is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, seeking to establish a comprehensive understanding of the events that unfolded.
The newly released body camera footage is accessible for viewing on the Rockford Police Department’s YouTube page. However, it is important to note that the video contains distressing content, and viewer discretion is strongly advised.
