Two Suspects Identified in Cañon City Incident

CAÑON CITY, Colo. (KKTV) – The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has identified two individuals involved in an incident that occurred in Cañon City on Sunday, resulting in a high-speed chase and one fatality.

According to CBI officials, Davonte Evans, a 21-year-old resident of Pueblo, was the deceased suspect. The second suspect, Jordan L. Ziegler, aged 19, was apprehended in Fremont County and subsequently released on a PR bond on Monday morning.

The pursuit began when multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Pueblo Police Department, the Cañon City Police Department, and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, chased a stolen KIA sedan on Highway 50. The suspect vehicle reached speeds exceeding 100mph before entering Cañon City around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. The pursuit continued as the vehicle turned northbound and eventually came to a stop in a field behind a residence on Central Avenue.

Tragically, Davonte Evans lost his life during the incident. Meanwhile, Jordan L. Ziegler managed to flee the scene but was later apprehended by the Cañon City police after an extensive search, which included air support. Ziegler now faces charges of Theft and Possession of a Concealed Weapon in connection to the events that unfolded in Cañon City.

Following the incident, the Cañon City police requested the assistance of CBI in investigating the matter. After conducting a preliminary review, CBI officials stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting that any officer discharged their firearm during the confrontation.

The investigation conducted by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is still ongoing, and no officers have been placed on administrative leave at this time.
