LIVINGSTON PARISH, La. (WAFB) – Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the tragic death of a 5-year-old boy, Leonardo “Leo” Eslinger, which is believed to have resulted from severe physical abuse in Livingston Parish, Louisiana.

Leonardo, who was known for his infectious laughter and adoration for Chase from Paw Patrol, was rushed to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans on December 28, 2023, after sustaining critical injuries. Sadly, he passed away three days later, leaving his family devastated.

Although born in Evansville, Indiana, Leonardo had been residing in Albany, Louisiana, according to local news outlet WFIE-TV.

Reports from WFIE-TV indicate that the injured child was airlifted from Albany to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, where medical professionals fought valiantly to save his life, but unfortunately, their efforts were in vain.

The boy’s 26-year-old father, Joseph Eslinger, and his girlfriend, Diana Lopez, also 26, have both been taken into custody. They are currently held at the Livingston Parish Detention Center on charges of Cruelty to a Juvenile with Major Injuries.

Albany Police Chief Boyd Wild, in an interview with WFIE-TV, refrained from disclosing any further details regarding the ongoing investigation at this time.

District Attorney Scott Perrilloux, contacted on Tuesday afternoon, confirmed that his office is closely monitoring the case and will collaborate with the Albany Police Department to review all available evidence. Based on the findings, the criminal charges may be upgraded or modified accordingly.

The Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office is currently conducting an autopsy on the deceased child. The chief investigator of the agency has stated that the autopsy process is expected to be lengthy, potentially taking a month or even longer to complete.
