According to the Cañon City Police Department (CCPD), multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), CCPD, and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO), were involved in the pursuit of a homicide suspect driving a stolen Kia sedan. The chase reached speeds of over 100 mph as it traveled westbound on Highway 50 from Pueblo into Cañon City shortly before 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

The CBI has revealed that the suspect vehicle then veered north and entered a field behind a house located in the 2800 block of Central Avenue. The stolen car eventually became inoperable in the field, prompting both suspects to flee on foot from the scene.

Law enforcement officers confronted one of the suspects, who has now been identified as 21-year-old Davonte Evans. Shots were fired during the confrontation, and tragically, Evans was pronounced dead at the scene. The CBI has clarified that there is currently no evidence to suggest that any officer fired their weapon, but an autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.

The second suspect, identified as 19-year-old Jordan L. Zeigler, managed to escape from the scene of the disabled vehicle. As a precautionary measure, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for a period of time. However, Zeigler was eventually apprehended and arrested after an extensive search. He is currently being held at the Fremont County Jail on charges of Theft and Possession of a Concealed Weapon.

Providing an update on Zeigler’s status, the CBI stated that he was released on a PR bond on Monday morning. However, they emphasized that Zeigler is solely facing charges related to the incident in Cañon City on Sunday.

It is worth noting that no officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave.
