Three Men Fatally Injured in San Diego County Crashes during the First Week of 2024

Authorities have recently released the identities of three individuals who tragically lost their lives in separate road accidents in San Diego County during the initial days of 2024.

The first incident occurred at approximately 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day when a fatal crash took place on South Santa Fe Avenue in San Marcos. Misael Figueroa-Gallardo, a 29-year-old resident of Vista, was driving a Toyota pickup truck when he unfortunately lost control of the vehicle. The truck veered off the road, collided with a light pole at West Mission Road, and subsequently overturned, engulfed in flames. Despite the efforts of emergency responders who managed to extract Figueroa-Gallardo from the burning wreckage, he was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to Palomar Medical Center.

The second tragic incident occurred on the evening of January 2nd, shortly before 7 p.m. Rufino Canete, a 65-year-old San Diego resident, was attempting to cross Midway Drive, just south of Sports Arena Boulevard, when he was struck by a northbound Chevrolet pickup truck. Sadly, Canete succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.

The third fatal collision occurred three days later in the Emerald Hills neighborhood of San Diego. Jadahn Schaefer, a 27-year-old Lemon Grove resident, was riding a motorcycle on eastbound state Route 94 near Kelton Road at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, when he collided with a broken-down vehicle. Tragically, Schaefer sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital.

These tragic incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for drivers, pedestrians, and motorcyclists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules at all times. Authorities continue to investigate these accidents to determine the exact circumstances surrounding each incident.
