The incident was reported to the police at approximately 4:15 a.m. on the aforementioned morning. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement authorities discovered two men who had sustained gunshot wounds at 2013 Metropolitan Street.

One of the victims, identified as Mark Epstein, was found in the backyard of the residence. Epstein, who resided at 2013 Metropolitan Street and made the emergency call after the shooting, had been shot in the chest and stomach. He was immediately transported to a local hospital in Sioux City and later transferred to an Omaha hospital for further medical attention. As of January 4, 2023, authorities report that Epstein remains hospitalized in Omaha.

The second victim, identified as 42-year-old Daniel Winge, was found lifeless at the front of the residence. Winge was pronounced dead at the scene by the responding officers.

According to court documents, the police obtained a statement from Jennifer Stewart, who was present at the house during the shooting. Stewart, who was dating Lundgren at the time, stated that she was visiting her friend Epstein at 2013 Metropolitan Street on the morning of the incident. During Stewart’s visit, Lundgren and Winge arrived at the house, looking for her.

Stewart mentioned that Epstein invited Lundgren and Winge into the residence, but an argument ensued regarding her. Lundgren was reportedly jealous of the time Stewart spent with Epstein and had previously assaulted him. The argument escalated, leading Lundgren to brandish his firearm and point it at Epstein. In response, Epstein retrieved his own firearm from his nearby bedroom. Stewart claims that shots were fired during the altercation, although she was uncertain about who fired first. In fear for her safety, Stewart sought refuge in a backroom, where she heard multiple gunshots.

After the shooting, Stewart left the house and got into Lundgren’s car, driving away from the scene. Lundgren called out to her, prompting her to stop the vehicle. Eventually, Stewart took Lundgren to a hospital to receive medical treatment for his gunshot wounds.

It wasn’t until the police reviewed surveillance footage from the area that Lundgren was identified as a possible suspect. After confirming his identity through multiple pieces of surveillance video, the authorities went to the hospital where Lundgren was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds to his leg and arm. However, at that time, Lundgren refused to cooperate with the officers’ inquiries.

After several months of investigation, Lundgren was arrested on January 5 and subsequently booked into the Woodbury County Jail. The charge of attempted murder against Lundgren is related to the alleged shooting of Epstein.

According to authorities mentioned in court documents, if Epstein does recover enough to be discharged, he will require long-term care as he will never regain the ability to care for himself independently.

As of January 8, no charges have been filed in relation to Winge’s death. KTIV is currently reaching out to the Sioux City Police Department to determine if any charges are anticipated for Winge’s demise.
