The deceased infant was identified as Harris’ child, although the exact identity was not disclosed. The cause of death was later determined to be a combination of “tracheal mucus plugging in the setting of Rhinovirus Enterovirus, Chlorpheniramine intoxication, and an unsafe sleep environment.” Notably, Chlorpheniramine is an ingredient found in Children’s Tylenol.

According to court documents, investigators found discrepancies in Harris’ initial account of the events, leading them to obtain a search warrant for her residence. During the search, they discovered a bottle of Children’s NyQuil intended for children aged six years and older, along with a syringe containing remnants of red liquid resembling the color of the NyQuil. Furthermore, a shopping bag similar to the one Harris was seen carrying in surveillance footage was found in the trash, along with a baby bottle filled with white milk tinged with a pinkish hue and red liquid in the nipple.

Additional evidence was uncovered from Harris’ mobile phone, including emails from the shelter where she resided, explicitly stating that she should not leave her children unattended on the property. Moreover, investigators found images of Children’s Tylenol on her phone, sourced from the internet. Text messages exchanged between Harris and an unidentified individual were also discovered, containing explicit language referencing sexual acts for payment, as well as discussions about engaging in sexual acts in a car. Surveillance footage captured Harris leaving her apartment at approximately 3:53 p.m. on July 28 and returning at around 4:42 p.m. the same day.

Sara Lashae Harris was apprehended by the police on January 5 and taken to the police headquarters for questioning. Following the reading of her Miranda rights, Harris admitted to leaving her six-week-old infant and 17-month-old toddler home alone from Friday night, July 28, 2023, until Sunday morning, July 30, 2023. Additionally, she confessed to administering NyQuil and melatonin to the infant victim via a bottle before leaving them unattended for 37 hours. Harris also admitted to consuming illicit street drugs and alcohol during her absence, further revealing that she had visited a nightclub in Tempe.
