Tense Moment in Weston Neighborhood Ends with Deputy-Involved Shooting

WESTON, FLA. (WSVN) – – A tense situation unfolded in a residential neighborhood in Weston, Florida when a man, barricaded inside a home with children, was injured in a deputy-involved shooting. The Broward Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident, which originated from a domestic dispute in Hollywood earlier that day.

Deputies arrived at the residence along Opal Creek Drive in Weston to check on the safety of two children residing in the home. However, upon their arrival, the man, later identified as 48-year-old Valdemar Milto, barricaded himself inside the house while armed with a weapon.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Broward Sheriff’s Office deployed their SWAT team and negotiators to the scene. After a series of negotiations, Milto emerged from the residence, still armed with his weapon. A concerned neighbor captured footage of Milto outside the home and negotiators attempting to communicate with him while he sat inside a white SUV parked in the driveway.

The video reveals a negotiator urging Milto to surrender, saying, “Sir, your daughters are out here. If you want to speak to them, you need to come out of the car with your hands up and leave the gun in the car.” Unfortunately, a confrontation ensued between Milto and the deputies, leading to two deputies firing their weapons.

Following the altercation, Milto fled the scene in the SUV, ultimately crashing into a tree. He then abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. However, deputies swiftly apprehended him a few seconds later. Milto was subsequently airlifted to a local hospital, where he is receiving treatment for gunshot wounds. The extent of his injuries and the number of times he was hit remain unknown at this time.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation into the shooting. As part of standard procedure, the two deputies who discharged their firearms have been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
