Randolph County, North Carolina

A man who allegedly attacked EMS workers and another man who assisted him have both been charged with assault on a government official, according to a news release from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday, Randolph County deputies responded to a distress call from Randolph County EMS workers on NC Hwy 42 at Glenn Country Road. The EMS personnel reported that they were in danger and requested assistance from law enforcement and fire officials. Deputies arrived at the scene around 7:04 a.m. and witnessed three fire officials struggling to restrain a 46-year-old man identified as Pedro Nava Anguiano.

Deputies immediately intervened and helped gain control over Anguiano, who continuously resisted their efforts to secure him. Eventually, Anguiano was placed in the back of an additional ambulance, and a deputy accompanied them to Randolph Health.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Anguiano began exhibiting irrational behavior, ignoring instructions, and becoming increasingly agitated while EMS personnel attempted to assess his condition. He managed to unbuckle his seat belt and engaged in a struggle with one of the attending workers, seizing a syringe with a needle.

The ambulance came to a halt, and the workers inside attempted to prevent Anguiano from exiting the vehicle. However, Anguiano managed to overpower them and knocked one of the attendants to the ground, initiating another physical altercation. Several firefighters arrived at the scene and assisted in subduing Anguiano. At the same time, another man, identified as 40-year-old Julio Cesar Salazar De-LaCruz, attempted to intervene by pushing and pulling the firefighters away from Anguiano.

With the combined effort of the firefighters and deputies, Anguiano was eventually restrained and taken into custody. Randolph County deputies swore out warrants for Anguiano, charging him with felony assault on emergency personnel causing physical injury, misdemeanor resist/obstruct/delay, and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. Additionally, a warrant was issued for Salazar De-LaCruz, charging him with misdemeanor assault on a government official.

Following his evaluation, Anguiano was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where he was served the warrant. The magistrate set a $10,000 secured bond for his release.

On Monday, Salazar De-LaCruz was apprehended by the Randolph County Criminal Apprehension Team. He was taken to the Randolph County Detention Center and served with his warrant for felony assault on a government official. The magistrate set a $3,000 secured bond for his release.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that emergency personnel face while carrying out their duties. Assaults on government officials, especially those working in critical roles such as EMS workers, are taken very seriously and will be met with swift legal action.
